Rev. Gail Tapscott was born in Atlanta, GA, and grew up in Mississippi. She went to high school in Pennsylvania where she first encountered Unitarians and became interested in politics.

Gail earned her B.A. in English/Journalism from American University in Washington, DC. She went on to St. John's College, Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she received her M.A. in Liberal Education. She holds a M.Div. from Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

In her pre-ministry life, Gail was an advertising and editorial assistant for the Journal on Water Pollution Control and then a teacher of English and Journalism in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Gail next spent almost twelve years as an environmental journalist in Washington, D.C. covering toxic substances regulated by the then fledgling Environmental Protection Agency.

Gail helped start several newsletters on state environmental policies and hazardous waste control, rising to Executive Editor of The Hazard Communication Exchange. During those years she also wrote a column "On the States Side" for the trade magazine World Waste.

During and after her time at Harvard Divinity School, Gail worked at a business publishing firm where she became the Director of Training. Her final pre-ministry post was as Director of the National Telephone Fund Raising Office for Greenpeace in Flagstaff, AZ.
